It is probably safe to assume that every health care practitioner in America has committed the Y92 or “the place of occurrence of the external cause” codes to memory.  But let’s see how sharp that memory is.  All but one of the following ICD-10 Y92 codes is real.  Can you identify the one that isn’t real?  Piece of cake, right?  Good luck!

icd-10 quizY92.000 – Kitchen of unspecified non-institutional (private) residence as the place of occurrence of the external cause

Y92.232 – Corridor of hospital as the place of occurrence of the external cause
Y92.254 – Theater (live) as the place of occurrence of the external cause
Y92.311 – Squash court as the place of occurrence of the external cause
Y92.415 – Exit ramp or entrance ramp of street or highway as the place of occurrence of the external cause
Y92.488 – Other paved roadways as the place of occurrence of the external cause

Y92.65 – Oil rig as the place of occurrence of the external cause
Y92.72 – Chicken coop as the place of occurrence of the external cause
Y92.74 – Orchard as the place of occurrence of the external cause
Y92.78 – Vineyard as the place of occurrence of the external cause
Y92.820 – Desert as the place of occurrence of the external cause
Y92.86 – Slaughterhouse as the place of occurrence of the external cause

Answer:

If you guessed ICD-10 code Y92.78, you are absolutely correct!  Y92.78 doesn’t exist and is not a real ICD-10 code.  Every other Y92 code is real and very reasonable, whereas “vineyard as the place of occurrence of the external cause” just seems so random and out of place compared to the others.  Congratulations!  Now go out there and apply your newfound clinical knowledge.  And remember: Don’t focus on a patient’s symptoms or objective signs; focus instead on the place of occurrence of the external cause because that is what truly matters!
