We all know that the ICD-10 committee has a sense of humor, because 68,000 codes?!  HAHAHAHA!!!!!  That’s HILARIOUS!  Well, turns out they have another joke up their sleeve.

fortune cookieTo spice things up, the ICD-10 committee has introduced the new IB or fortune cookie “in bed” modifier to spice up all 68,000 ICD-10 codes.  How does it work?  In the same way that you simply add “in bed” to the end of a fortune in a fortune cookie, just add the same phrase to the end of an ICD-10 code.  That’s it!  Not only is it funny, it’s billable!  And that’s all that matters, right?

Let’s take a look at some of our favorites:

W61.12XA – Struck by macaw, initial encounter… in bed

W61.33XD – Pecked by chicken, subsequent encounter… in bed

V00.122A – Non-in-line roller-skater colliding with stationary object, initial encounter… in bed

V98.2XXS – Accident to, on or involving ice yacht, sequela… in bed

Q55.64 – Hidden penis… in bed

Z43.7 – Encounter for attention to artificial vagina… in bed

T71.231S – Asphyxiation due to being trapped in a (discarded) refrigerator, accidental, sequela… in bed

U327.91A – Accident to, on or involving The Force, initial encounter… in bed

Fun and easy to use, so go crazy out there!  And please share any of YOUR favorite “in bed” modifiers with us!  We’d love to hear… in bed!
