For the 10th consecutive year, Da Vinci, the surgery-performing automaton extraordinaire has won TIME magazine’s coveted Robot of the Year award. Many people in the health care industry weren’t sure if Da Vinci would maintain his reign at the top of the robotics food chain, but once again, he would not be denied. Nancy Gibbs, editor of TIME, states the periodical had an exhaustive search evaluating hundreds of robots, ultimately deciding that Da Vinci would crush them all in a battle of brains and brawn.
“What really impressed us about Da Vinci this year was that he bulked up a little,” reports Gibbs. “His 6 arms somehow got stronger. Before we know it, he’ll be doing ortho surgeries.
According to sources, Da Vinci had to lobby a little harder for the award this year to overcome strong campaigns from a Stryker chair and automatic hand sanitizer dispensers. The multi-armed virtuoso had professional head shots done which he mailed to the TIME magazine offices on a weekly basis.
“He really wanted this,” states Gibbs. “Some people wanted to give the award to an operating room thermostat, but I pointed out that Da Vinci could crush a thermostat with one of his arms while performing a flawless hysterectomy.”
A ceremony will take place in operating room 3 congratulating Da Vinci on his award at 3pm this afternoon.
