Phoenix, AZ: In what can only be described as an act of creative desperation, circulating nurse Susan Bremington found a novel way of dealing with what is no stranger to any OR staff— a fidgety medical student. Bremington’s solution: an extra large Bouncy Seat, big enough to hold MS3 Alex Baker, keep him entertained, secured, and out of the way of the operating table
“He kept breaking sterility, moving the retractors, leaning up against the patient…he’s really a handful,” explained Bremington, whose job includes keeping an eye on medical students on their surgery rotation. “But he’s just so friendly and enthusiastic, I don’t want to kick him out entirely. This way he can watch all the excitement from his own special seat!”
Bremington explained that her stroke of genius for Michaels was inspired by her 8 month-old son, who is just starting to crawl.
“I can’t always watch him to make sure he’s not about start pulling on drapes or biting the table. With the bouncy seat, he’s out of the way, but can still have fun without anyone getting hurt” Bremington remarked. It remains unclear if she is referring to Baker or to her baby boy.
Playskool has contacted recently contacted Medtronic to discuss designs of a medical grade bouncy seat, Bounce n’ Pimp, for attendings and residents to place unruly medical students without the additional burden of “cleaning up their constant mistakes”. Bounce n’ Pimp will come with a built in plastic hemostat, light up vital signs, and a Sing-Along Anatomy Atlas.
