Intern Ernest Smith reportedly interrupted nursing sign out in order to request assistance for a cervical check on one of his laboring patients 3 nights ago. Witnesses report that Ernest seemed a bit apprehensive before interrupting, but proceeded regardless.

Day nurse Julia told us “I saw Ernest standing there like he wanted to ask a question. You know, waiting patiently like he wants something, but not really making eye contact.”

Erin, the night nurse was going to let him “wait it out” as they continued to sign out. Julia was reportedly flabbergasted as Ernest requested their assistance to do “one last cervical check” before sign out to get the patient “teed up for the night team”.

The charge nurse said that early on she really had high hopes that Ernest was “one of the good ones”, and she expected that “this late in the year, he really should’ve known better”. When asked for comment, Ernest explained that he “really needed to do one last cervical exam” for the night team and that he was willing “to take the hit” no matter the cost. As of yesterday, the L&D nurses were still giving Ernest the silent treatment.
