BOSTON, MA – Rotating Orthopedics 4th year resident, Dr. Brandt Sullivan, caught a medication error at Boston Children’s Hospital two nights ago. Dr. Sullivan was in his call room watching Crossfit videos when his arm accidentally bumped the computer mouse and pulled up the hospital’s EMR on the screen. Placing his GripMaster hand strengtheners on the table, Dr. Sullivan leaned forward to focus on the chart of one of his patients who had been admitted earlier in the night with a supracondylar fracture. The patient’s medication list showed the patient was ordered to receive 400mg of Ibuprofen every six hours, but the patient was only 30 kg. Without hesitating, Dr. Sullivan pulled out his travel abacus and calculated the patient was receiving, “too much ibuprofen.” He quickly adjusted the order to reflect the correct dose of 300mg every six hours and returned to watching men jump on boxes.
At press time, sources revealed Dr. Sullivan was in the running for the hospital’s Humanism Award due to his tireless patient safety efforts.
